WGAW Statement on FCC Proposed Net Neutrality Rules

LOS ANGELES -- The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) has issued the following statement in response to the announcement today by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski of proposed rules for an open Internet.

“The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) applauds Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski for taking an important step in formally adding open internet rules to the Commission’s December 21 agenda. This action was sorely needed and the WGAW looks forward to working with the Commission to strengthen the Chairman’s order.

Writers who create content for film, television, and new media are especially concerned about a future Internet in which access is either tiered or controlled by conglomerates that would have inordinate power over consumers and frightening influence on freedom of expression. An open and vibrant Internet is critical to protecting our democracy and competition in the marketplace.”
