WGF: Golden Age Television Writers on the Big Screen

The series, which runs through July and August, kicks off July 7 with multi-Oscar and Writers Guild Award-winning Network, written by Paddy Chayefsky.

Monday Madness Mash-Up Mixer

Four groups of up to six writers, each led by a showrunner, will be given a set-up for a TV series with 45 minutes to generate pilot logline, world, and series arc. Characters and setting to be pulled from bag into which attendees have dropped their ideas upon arrival. Beth Schwartz (Arrow) leads sci-fi room; David Slack (MacGyver) leads drama room; feature and comedy room showrunners TBA! "Living in the Middle" series with Jose and Javi: Production in the Middle

In this second of three sessions tackling pre-, production, and post-, Javi (Javier Grillo-Marxuach) and Jose (Molina) break down workflow and etiquette for the writer representing the script (and showrunner's vision) amidst high stakes, high-pressure, fast-moving world of physical production. You're tasked by showrunner as "on set producer." What does that mean? How do you comport yourself? Who can/do/should you talk to? A writer can often feel like an interloper/unwanted guest/fifth wheel, but it need not be that way. Learn how to avoid pitfalls and integrate into the hard-working community of artists that take the show from script to screen.

Creating Your Personal Logline with Carole Kirschner

How'd you get into writing?" and sometimes the dreaded "Tell me about yourself." Committee of Women Writers welcomes career coach/author Carole Kirschner. As Director of WGA's Showrunner Training Program, creator of CBS Diversity Writers Program, and a creative executive, Kirschner has hired and mentored hundreds of entertainment professionals, giving her a unique insight into how writers can shape personal stories into carefully crafted and compelling anecdotes that stay with executives and showrunners long after meetings end. After her presentation, Kirschner will guide attendees through an exercise to jumpstart personal loglines, followed by a practice/feedback session with fellow attendees over appetizers and drinks.

Calling all WGA writers! The Committee of Black Writers (CBW) is seeking submissions for a night of scene readings about multi-dimensional black characters. All guild members in active status are encouraged to submit. Click for Submission Guidelines. CBW will cast and produce, while the selected writer(s) will direct his or her scene. Selections made based on quality and castability. Please note that scenes must be about black characters, not just include one. Writers may submit more than one entry, but they must be submitted separately. The Black Scene will then take place on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. We look forward to receiving your scenes!
