FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why was the WGAW Adult Animation Report Card created?
This report card serves as a guide to help writers understand which companies are most open to WGA coverage so writers can prioritize which companies to pitch their projects to.
Why are only these companies included in the report card?
While many companies are involved in producing animated projects, the studios featured in the report card have been identified as the decision-makers determining WGA coverage.
How is the grading determined?
This report card includes adult animation series released or picked up to series in the last two seasons.
A company’s grade reflects how receptive it has been to cover these new animated series under a WGA deal.
The grades are based on public information, industry databases, internal Guild data, and writer reports about their recent experiences pitching/selling animated projects.
If a company received an F, does that mean I shouldn’t pitch to them?
A lower grade indicates a studio has been less receptive or unwilling to agree to WGA coverage in the recent past. This report card is a guide, not a restriction; writers can weigh multiple factors when deciding where to pitch.
The more WGAW animation writers unite to demand WGA coverage, the stronger writers’ collective power becomes to push lower-ranked companies toward making WGA deals.
Isn’t Fox the birthplace of WGA Adult Animation coverage? How did it receive an F?
20th Television has covered projects under WGA deals and continues to do so under its ownership by Disney, but Fox Entertainment is a separate studio owned by Fox Corporation and has been unwilling to make WGA deals for adult animation.
How can I contribute to this effort?
If you are currently pitching or getting ready to pitch your adult animated project, contact the WGAW Member Organizing team. We encourage you to share what you hear from companies in real time, which will support our efforts to aid writers in their negotiations.
How can I use this report card when working with my reps (e.g. agent, manager, lawyer)?
Prioritize Pitches: Use the rankings to advocate pitching to companies with a better track record of making WGA deals.
Educating Your Reps: Your reps may not know that the WGA covers adult animation. Sit down with them and explain why this is important to you and the benefits of being covered by a WGA agreement. They might not be aware which companies are actively making WGA deals.
Pushing for WGA Coverage: If negotiating with a lower-ranked company, use the report card as a starting point for a conversation with your reps about ensuring WGA coverage and that you are willing to fight for it.
